Vlieland is from the west the second island of the Wadden and is after Schiermonnikoog the smallest permanently inhabited waddenisland. The small scale of the island is seen as one of the main advantages by many tourists. Cars are not allowed on the island, but everything on the island is within walking or cycling distance. The island has one town, Oost-Vlieland. The landscape is characterized by dune territory, beaches and relatively many woods.
